Jane E. Nugent, LRI ’95 to be Honored with Habits of the Heart Award: LRI Awards Luncheon

LRI is proud to celebrate and recognize alumni and community members that have contributed to nearly 40 years of our organization’s development and success.

Leadership Rhode Island’s signature annual luncheon, the 2019 Inspiring “leadership, actually” Awards Luncheon, will be held on Thursday, March 14th from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm at the Providence Marriott Hotel, located at 1 Orms Street in Providence.

Since 1981, Leadership Rhode Island has engaged and connected people through shared experiences that positively transform individuals, organizations and communities. This year, we’re proud to celebrate and recognize alumni and community members that have contributed to nearly 40 years of our organization’s development and success.

Jane E. Nugent, LRI ’95 to be Honored with Habits of the Heart Award

Jane - smallJane Nugent has spent 22 years of her career working for the United Way of Rhode Island and 29 years as a volunteer for Leadership Rhode Island. She is a devotee of Alexis de Toqueville’s Democracy in America and has a deep belief of the role of civic engagement in America. Jane loves the de Toqueville phrase “Habits of the Heart” characterized by the principles of: We’re All in This Together, Appreciation of Otherness, Capacity to Hold Tension Creatively, Sense of Voice and Agency, Capacity to Create Community.

Jane has been recognized for her leadership in several capacities, including the Alumni Association Leadership Award from Bridgewater State University, Eunice Day Award from Goodwill Industries of RI, YWCA of Greater RI Outstanding Women’s Award, United Way of America’s Mary M. Gates Volunteer/Staff Achievement Award, and was elected Class Speaker by her 1995 LRI Omicron Class.

Prior to her work in the nonprofit sector, Jane taught for a number of years, including five years in England. She began her work in the nonprofit sector in the early 1980’s and continues to work and volunteer in the sector today. She holds academic degrees from Bridgewater State University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Jane subscribes to Parker Palmer’s quote from Healing the Heart of Democracy in her own belief and approach to her mission-driven work and volunteerism:  Can we be equitable?  Can we be generous? Can we listen with our whole beings, not must our minds, and offer our attention rather than our opinions?  And do we have enough resolve in our hearts to act courageously, relentlessly, without giving up – ever – trusting our fellow citizens to join with us in our determined pursuit of a living democracy.?
