The board of directors of Beacon Mutual Insurance Company, a Warwick, R.I.-based workers’ compensation carrier, has elected Brian Spero (LRI '84) as president and CEO of the company, effective in July.

CCRI: No penalty for leaving state after getting RI Promise scholarship
There is no scenario where students would be required to pay back their two-year scholarships if they fail to meet certain requirements set by the state – including the residency pledge – according to Alix Ogden (LRI '12), chief of staff to CCRI President Dr. Meghan Hughes.

Providence moving forward with municipal ID program
The proposal has the support of the Providence Police, according to Capt. Dean Isabella (LRI '14). He said “everyone in the city of Providence should feel they have access to the police department,” and the cards will be good for public safety.

Meet the Young Latino Mayor Who Is Bringing Back His Rhode Island City
James Diossa (LRI '12) became the mayor of Central Falls in 2012 at the age of 27. His victory came at a time when the city was shocked by scandal; former mayor Charles Moreau had been indicted on corruption charges and the city had declared bankruptcy.

At a ceremony held at the Dunkin' Donuts Center, Mayor Jorge Elorza, Public Safety Commissioner Steven M. Paré (LRI '01), Police Chief Colonel Hugh T. Clements, Jr. (LRI '05), and members of the Providence Police Department honored the graduates.

Rhode Island College says it obeyed all rules in granting Montanaro leave, tuition waiver
And the commissioner of post-secondary education, the newly appointed Brenda Dann-Messier (LRI '87), will work with officials from each of the state’s three public colleges to analyze each institution’s tuition-waiver policy.

Governor signs fiscal 2018 budget
Senate Finance Committee Chairman William J. Conley (LRI '01), D-East Providence, said the agreement frees the state to move forward, “allowing the excise tax phaseout while still providing protections that will monitor its economic feasibility for the state.”
